What is an ITIN?

ITIN stands for “Individual Taxpayer Identification Number”. It is a U.S tax processing number issued by the Internal Revenue Service for those who may not qualify for a social security number and need to file for a federal tax return. It is a 9-digit number that always starts with the number 9.

Why do I need an ITIN?

The role of the ITIN is to help an individual comply with U.S tax laws and to provide a means to efficiently process and account for tax returns and payments.

  • Qualifying dependents can claim tax benefits and file their taxes
  • It may allow you to apply for a mortgage loan or open a bank account
  • It will allow you to get a refund of income tax withholding from the IRS if you qualify

The required documents for the Individual taxpayer identification number applications process include:

  • U.S. driver’s license
  • Document for National Identity (current documentation including your name, address, date of birth, photo, and expiry date)
  • Foreign driver's license
  • U.S. State I.D.
  • Birth Certificate (required for a dependent unless a passport is being submitted and the passport has a date of entry into the U.S.)
  • School records (for dependents who are students under age 18 only)
  • Foreign Voter's Registration card
  • U.S Military ID card
  • Medical (for dependents under age 6 only)
  • Photo I.D. for U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services
  • Visa issued by the U.S. Department of State
  • Foreign Military ID card

ITIN Renewal Process

ITINS expire every 3, (three), years as a result of the PATH act which was brought in on December 2015 in order to protect Americans from tax hikes. If your number has expired, then you will not be eligible for specific tax credits, these include the American opportunity tax credit and the child tax credit. It will also delay your tax refund. If you need to renew your ITIN, our certified acceptance agents and tax professionals are here to answer any of your questions and help you through the entire process.
